Libby (surname withheld) has lived most of her adult life in a war-torn country in Asia. For over thirty years she worked with her late husband, Tom, to improve the lives of the local people, especially their eyesight. They worked in an eye clinic and related community development projects elsewhere in the country.
Libby also served as an English teacher and in leadership roles for the local expatriate community. Libby and Tom raised their three girls, persevered through several regime changes, and lived in a difficult place out of love for God and His people.
Libby has had many experiences of God’s grace at work, and her story now includes the sad task of serving without Tom, tragically killed in 2010. Her journey with God has been extraordinary, to be sure, but most importantly, it has been an ordinary Christian’s response to the world’s need and God’s call to serve.
Our newsfeeds fill with stories of suffering and injustice. We feel compassion. We pray. We also read stories of ordinary Christians who gave up everything and risked their lives out of love for Jesus. We feel inspired. We pray. The commands and example of Jesus compel us to respond. But what can we do? Can we really make any difference? And what are we prepared to sacrifice in the process?
There are very real things that we can do, and the choice will be different for each of us. As we each choose to follow Jesus - into service, into friendships, and even into risk - we make His love tangible in our lives and in our world.
We invite you to join us as we hear from one ordinary Christian, and connect with the work of many others who are dear to us in Asia and the Arab world.
