Kenyan Civil Unrest

Kenyan Civil Unrest

Backlash after elections in Kenya have led to demonstrations and widespread rioting across the country. Around 800 people have been killed and 250,000 displaced as they flee violence, fuelled by tribal and political unrest. As political parties wrestle for power after disputed election results, some tribal groups are using the instability to settle old scores. Several of TEAR Australia's partners are responding to the needs of people displaced by civil unrest in Kenya. They ask for our support and prayers during this difficult time.

Darfur, Sudan

Darfur, Sudan

Despite the signing of the peace agreement in May 2006, the conflict in Darfur has continued to escalate and bring suffering to millions. 250,000 people were forced to flee their homes for Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps between July and December 2006 alone, some of these for the second or third time. More than two million people have been affected by the attacks and counter attacks of the Sudanese army, government backed militia and the rebel forces. Reports from the UN claim that children are being recruited into the fighting forces of both sides, and girls continue to be subjected to sexual abuse.

Bangladesh Cyclone

Bangladesh Cyclone

On the night of Thursday 15 November, the southern coastal areas of Bangladesh were struck by the worst cyclone in over 30 years. With winds of up to 240 km/hr, Cyclone Sidr's impact was devastating. The current death toll is over 3000, and expected to rise to 10000. Millions of people have been made homeless, and vast areas of about-to-be-harvested crops have been flattened.
