Carbon Fast

Download

We invite you, your church or small group to participate in TEAR’s Carbon Fast to simplify your lifestyle, and to explore the impacts of our consumption on God’s earth and the world’s poor. Be the change, by living more simply, justly and sustainably.

Fasting in the Bible takes on huge significance as a period of reflection, giving up luxuries, seeking God, repentance and transformation. Christians have often fasted for 40 days to follow Christ's own 40 days and 40 nights fasting in the desert at the very beginning of his ministry. The Carbon Fast involves 40 simple daily actions, accompanied by a 7-part study series, that enable you to live, learn, give, pray and advocate for justice in a changing climate.

We also know that God desires our fasting to specifically be an act of bringing justice for the poor. In Isaiah 58, the Lord says, "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?"

Reflect on God's creation and take action to protect the world's poorest and most vulnerable communities from the impacts of climate disaster.
